From the Director

"We have two lives - the one we learn with, and the life we live after that."

Steven Dietz borrows this line from Bernard Malamud's The Natural in the dedication pages of the script of Becky's New Car.  Becky lives a life that is "content, and complete."  She has a loving husband, an intelligent son, a decent but demanding job, friends.  Everything a person could want. Right?

So what leads her to the life she has to learn with?  Lack of excitement?  Fear of mortality?  She is surrounded by the memories of people who have died too young and who felt like they were never really seen by others.

Then Becky finds excitement!  And she has to live her life after that.

Becky's New Car has been a learning and living experience for all of us involved.  We learned script analysis, carpentry and tailoring, lighting design and sound, video and computer effects.  We also learned about life itself and human interactions, motivations and mistakes, betrayal and regrets and forgiveness.  All the lighthearted stuff that a good comedy should teach us!

"Life is chaos and holidays," Walter Flood says.  Here's hoping yours is more holiday and less chaos.  But I suppose the chaos is the life we learn with.
