Sister Act -

St. Joseph High School

 Director's Letter

Good Evening and Welcome!

Mother Superior: Perhaps one day you will know that that is the word of God.

Deloris: Perhaps one day you will know that that is just being Human.

Mother Superior: Or Perhaps one day we will realize it is both.  And they are the same thing.  Nothing matters more than love, it is a gift from above.  Every song we play-

Deloris: Every prayer that we pray-

Mother Superior: Makes a bond in a way that’s profound.

Deloris & Mother Superior: We’re just here to spread the love around.

I can still remember the first time that I saw the original Whoopi Goldberg film “Sister Act”  in the early 1990’s.  Walking out of the theater, I felt that I had just received a warm hug from the most unlikely of stories.  How does a mobster girlfriend who witnesses a murder and then goes to live in a Catholic nunnery to hide from the mob, while teaching funk music to nuns, make any sense as a plot at all?

The beauty of this piece lies in the fact that as Deloris VanCartier is changed by the humility, generosity, and selflessness of the sisters; they too are changed by her passion, vivacity, and energy.  The Catholic Church is a place to be seen, embraced, and protected.  It’s warm and caring and inviting, especially to those who are most downtrodden.  This comes through in every moment of this show.

The good will, love, and joy of this piece is ever present in its’ musical form and I hope that you will leave feeling as I did thirty (!!!!) years ago.  Enjoy this warm hug and remember that God’s love and the love of your fellow man are all that you really need in this life.

“Bless Our Show” and “Raise Your Voice” in congratulating our amazing drama family!
