“Let’s start at the very beginning. A very good place to start.” Starting a new theatre program in a new school with many of the cast being new is not for the light of heart. When I applied for the director position, I didn’t know what to expect. I also never predicted that I would be taking on the job of producer and choreographer. I was thankful when Sarah and Betsy offered to take half of the roles. I will forever be indebted for all of their hard work and dedication.
Starting a new program has been fraught with a variety of challenges I never dreamed of. When I first walked into this amazing space, we had nothing in the scene shop, costume shop, or prop shop. No screws, nails, wood, hangers, or places to hang costumes or store props. We were fortunate enough to have angels from Sun Prairie Civic Theatre, Jim Tropp from Parker Arts Academy, who donated props, and Don Trapp from Utzig Carstar Collision Service for donating Greased Lighting. We also were starting from scratch when it came to the crew. I am so thankful to Ken Keith, Mark Mellecker, and Matt Weyer for ensuring that all things technical were accurately completed. One of my biggest angels has been Crystal Gavin. Also, to the rest of my production staff, Kelsey Klug, Steve Sveum, Sharon White, Rhianna O’Toole, Chadwick Murray, and Tim McCarthy, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
When trying to decide what show to open this space, I wanted to make ensure it was a show that not only would showcase this amazing space; but also was recognizable to the majority of students and the community. There are many shows that could fit that bill, but Grease won. I have loved watching the enthusiasm the entire cast has had during the entire process. Their joy and talents shine through. I have a mix of new and experienced cast and crew, which has added to the excitement.
We couldn’t do Grease without mentioning Olivia Newton-John. When we think about Grease, her portrayal of Sandy will forever be in our hearts and minds. Rest in Peace!
I will leave you with two quotes that resonated with me during the production. The first one is “It’s not if you win or lose, it’s what you do with your dancing shoes.” I hope that watching this show will remind you to always find a way to get out there and dance for the pure joy of it. You never lose when you find the joy in life. The second is an African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” It also takes a village to create magic. Here’s to the magic of live theatre and the ability to enjoy it together.
