Thank you so much for joining us tonight! We are so glad that you have come out to support live theatre in San Antonio. The Drowsy Chaperone is a fun, silly, and hilarious musical comedy, but the show's genre is not familiar to some. The Drowsy Chaperone is a satire. As a director and as an educator, I was excited by the opportunity to teach our students and our community about this rarely represented genre.
Satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize society's ignorance or vices. In the show tonight you will see racial stereotypes, whitewashing, innuendo, and political jabs. It will make you laugh and some of it may give you pause, but all of this is the truest intent of satire and it is what is truly great about the medium of live theatre.
If we have made you laugh and if we have made you reflect, then we have reached the truest intent of the show!
With great gratitude,
Amanda Pyle, Director
