How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying - May 30 - June 01, 2019

The Clinton School

 NOTES

I have had such a blast this year working on How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Everyone has worked so hard and put so much heart into this show,  and I hope it is apparent in the final product you see tonight. As always,  it has been an incredible privilege to watch these students grow every day in their talents and dedication to this.  I am so happy I have been able to be a small part of it.

We have been working very hard over the last few months to bring you this version of How to Succeed. Something I really wanted to emphasize and perhaps deviate from in our production is the limitations of women during this time period. Especially with the #metoo movement in recent history, I wanted to make the casting more gender blind and also push the idea that women didn't always have to stick to being low on the business ladder. That during this time we had women succeeding in large corporations as well as the men,  though it might not have been spoken of as often. Three women during this time that pushed these limits were Helena Rubinstein, Coco Chanel, and Elizabeth Arden. They faced much adversity, but still led the way in their own companies. When working with these students,  I wanted to make sure they understood what it meant for women to be in these positions during this time. How both amazing and yet perilous it was.

I am so grateful for the vast amount of support I always get during the process of the shows here at Clinton.  Everyone involved in the process has been so supportive and hard working as well. First, I wanted to thank Jackie Moe for her hard work in teaching the students all of this music as well as prepping our orchestra.  Not only that but being able to jump in anytime I needed help during something. You are incredible! Next, I wanted to thank Abby Page for being the best assistant anyone could ask for. You were always on top of everything,  and I never had to worry about things with you there. You were definitely my rock during all of this. To Nikki and all of the tech crew, thank you for the hard work on the set, prop, and costume construction for the show. I appreciate the hard work you put into this and continue to do during the run of the show. To John, Ann, Cecilia, Carina, Monique, and the rest of the Parent Association,  thank you all for the incredible work behind the scenes in putting this show together. This production could not be possible without you.
Lastly, to Morgan. I cannot tell you how much of a pleasure it has been to work with you these past two years. I appreciate you so very much. Your love and dedication to us theater students is incredibly inspiring. You were always there for me when I needed assistance, and I know I could always rely on you during a production. I will miss you next year, but I wish you all of the best in your future endeavors.

To all the parents of the students involved in How to Succeed, thank you so much for your assistance and for allowing your children to be a part of this show. We could not have done this show without your aid and support.
