Company - February 26 - February 27, 2016

The College of New Jersey

 End Notes

Notes from the Director:

When I first found out I would be joining The College of New Jersey, I was very excited. A beautiful campus, a stunning theatre and talented young people opened doors to me this fall.

The students and I chose "Company" as our first collaboration. Although written in 1970, the show still resonates today. Commitment, relationships, dating... nothing has gotten easier over the past forty years. Stephen Sondheim's music remains as strong and meaningful as the day he wrote songs like: Sorry, Grateful, Marry Me A Little, and Being Alive. These remain theatre's most powerful statements about what it means to commit to anyone.

We have taken the issue of dating and marriage and brought it into the 21st century by exploring the question, "What has social media done to our ability to connect and commit?" Specifically, we now ask the question, "How does Bobby connect with anyone, when he can use electronics to avoid human pain and vulnerability altogether?"

The story remains the same, but the issues seem even more complicated today. With that in mind, we have partnered with TCNJ's IMM department to create a theatrical experience that explores both personal and social media relationships.

We could not have done this without the unbelievable support of the The College of New Jersey. TCNJ has really opened its doors and heart and said, "Come on in! Take some risks! We'll have your back!"

So, thank you seems small, but nevertheless, thank you.
