Heathers The Musical - March 27 - April 05, 2020

The Fleming Island Theater Incorporated

 Director's Notes

Welcome to The Thunderdome!

It's been an upended spring for everyone and a long winding road to get to tonight's production.  We are so glad that you have been able to join us.  Tonight's cast and crew started this journey back in December with our goal to be done with this production by early spring and now we are welcome summer as it takes the stage.  Due to the circumstances, they have had to pause and practice remotely as well as say goodbye to friends who couldn't finish the production due to conflicting schedules and welcome new friends in to see it to fruition.  Performing tonight has become more than just putting on a show but a triumph over adversity as the product on stage means we are moving forward.  Thank you so much for sharing this moment with us.

Heathers the musical is based on the 80s movie of the same title.  If you were a fan of the movie, you will recognize many elements from the original and delight in the songs and characters as they unfold on our giant croquet field - and homage to the movie opening as well as the strategic game the characters play in the show.  If you have not seen the movie, you may be shocked at times by the story as it unfolds.  This is not a fairy tale by any means and it may be the first time you've seen some of our actors in something so raw and unnerving.

The theme behind the musical is one that resonnates with our youth today as much as it did in the 80s.  It highlights the anguish of high school - a place it compares not to an instituion of higher learning but to the battleground called the Thunderdome.  Our heroine finds herself in a myriad of complex social problems after involving herself with the school rulers and one particular school outcast.  How did she get there and how do she survive with her soul intact is the question of the night?
