In a time where our country is more politically divided than ever, it is nice to reflect on a politician who could bring people together... at least that is the myth surrounding Ann Richards. I didn't land in Texas until 1996, but for those who were here during her time in office, there continues to be a level of admiration and even adoration for the late Governor Richards. Not something that we can say about our political leadership since.
I am so pleased to have been able to work with Nora Hahn on this production. Nora and I have been talking about and tossing around the show for years now...and I wouldn't want to work with anyone but her on this. Her work ethic toward the craft of acting, her dedication to "getting Ann right," and her ability to not take herself too seriously all make her a dream actor to shepherd through a production. And this one was about shepherding Nora, giving her feedback, a push here, a little blocking there--nothing drastic, just working to make the best presentation of her work to give an honest representation of Ann.
Like her or not, Ann Richards was funny and vulgar and more importantly, impactful. Nora and I hope that this performance will be impactful on you as well. You don't have to agree with someone to be respectful of them--what Governor Richards called "fair play.". And so, with the hope that you are positively impacted by this production--Buckle up, Darlin', here comes Ann.
