Cinderella - March 12 - March 14, 2015

The High School of St. Thomas More

 End Notes

Director's Note:

Cinderella is a timeless tale, the penultimate princess story, and something that almost all little girls commit to heart at a very early age. But what I enjoy most about this version is that Cinderella, the girl, doesn't simply allow things to happen to her; she is the impetus for the action. It is her staunch and unwavering desire to attend the ball, to assert herself when she routinely puts others before herself, that convinces her Fairy Godmother to help her. There is a deep heart beating in this seemingly frivolous fairy story. Cinderella and her Prince are evenly matched in kindness, compassion and wit. Class is meaningless.

I also appreciate that all of the women in this narrative do what they do because they love.  The Fairy Godmother doesn't just dole out magical aid willy-nilly; she waits for Cinderella to "officially wish" for help. She does this because she doesn't want her godchild to become too dependent on magical aid; ultimately, she wants Cinderella to be happy and self-sufficient. Queen Maisie, like any other mother worth her salt, also wants her child, Prince Christopher, to be happy, to have what she has - love and a family. Even the Stepmother acts out of love, because she wants the best for her daughters, though her love just happens to manifest itself to us as snobishness, greed and selfishness.

Many good things begin with a wish and this show is not any different. There are a million people I need to thank in this small space, so here goes:

  • First, Becky Park for her amazing talent, honesty and keen eye for detail. "Thanks " doesn't even begin to cover it. I am so incredibly lucky that I get to work with you.
  • To my cast: you're the best! Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this production. I am so proud of you.
  • To the crew: this production would be "Impossible" without you backstage.
  • Jack Clifford: your enthusiasm and talent are most appreciated. Thank you so much for taking on the set design!
  • Music and Drama (MaD) parents: your generosity is overwhelming and I deeply thank you for the time and effort you all put in to making this an amazing experience. I know I ask a lot of your talents and you continually exceed my wild expectations. Thank you for the gift of your children.
  • My STM family: thank you for your kind words, prayers and support. I am so blessed I get to work with you here.
  • My husband, son and daughter, family and friends: you are my rock and inspiration. Thanks for holding down the fort these past few months and for keeping me sane. I love you.

Thank you so much for supporting STM Music and Drama! We appreicate your presence and hope you enjoy the show. We are constantly striving to provide quality entertainment that aligns with our school mission statement and gives glory to Our Lord.
