A Little Night Music - August 12 - August 21, 2016

The Permian Playhouse

 Director's Note

As an aficionado of Broadway composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, A Little Night Music has always been one of my favorite shows.  It is brilliant in both its musical structure and amazing use of rhyme patterns to both tell the story and express the essence of each character.  Based on the Ingmar Bergman film “Smiles of a Summer Night,” A Little Night Music focuses on tangled love-triangles, not unlike present-day afternoon soap operas.  These triangles twist and rotate like the rotation of the waltz upon which the score is built.  The story foretold by Madam Armfeldt as she offers worldly advice to her granddaughter, is punctuated by the ever-present Liebeslieder Singers (Quintet) acting as a Greek Chorus to comment and move the story forward.

Considered a “cross-over” piece, A Little Night Music is performed by opera companies as well as regional theatre companies.  Rarely performed by community theatre due to its complex score, I felt that the talent pool here in the Basin was up to the task.  This production boasts performers from Odessa, Midland and Crane, bringing a variety of solid experience. Coupled with our equally talented production team my vision for this show is a reality.  Community theatre is a labor of love for all involved.  I hope you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed creating it for you.
