The Play You Want -

The Road Theatre

 Special Statements

Welcome to the Road Theatre’s 30th Anniversary Season and to LIVE THEATRE!!! From the past two years of words like social distancing, Zoom, virtual, hybrid, and remote, our company is excited to (safely)bring you back to in-person entertainment. The Road has lined up an exciting three-play repertory season, supporting our continuing mission of inclusive, entertaining, and thought-provoking theatre.

And we couldn’t begin with a better example of all that than Bernardo Cubria’s “The Play You Want.” This is the first play to emerge from the Road’s Under Construction program, a year-long development program for a group of writers run by Board Member Carlyle King, Dramaturge Jessica Broutt and Mackenna Goodrich.“The Play You Want” deals with the process of theatre, and a writer’s hilarious quest to “create something that sells” without losing his soul in the process. As Bernardo himself describes it, “a satire about the American theatre that steals a lot from THE PRODUCERS but no music or singing, and, like, Mexican.

We hope you enjoy it, and please come back to the rest of this Road Repertory Season!

PLAYWRIGHT'S NOTE:

Dear people who actually read these things,

I poke fun at a lot of real people in this play. Mostly myself - but also a lot of real people. And the truth is, I greatly admire all of the people I make fun of in this piece for the exceptional artists that they are. Well, not Scott Rudin. Ese guey vale madres.

I also believe that no one is above satire. I hope it becomes clear that the main point of this play is to confront the institutional racism of American Theatre. That's the "king" in the play and the rest of us - including myself - are just a bunch of fools.
