Families & Friends of St. Johnsbury School Theatre:
When I was a senior in high school, I played Harry the Horse in Guys and Dolls. Fast forward a few years (don’t ask how many), and here I am, directing this classic with a new generation of performers. Ms. Joy, who has directed this show multiple times, and I have had a blast revisiting the world of high-stakes gamblers, showgirls, and floating crap games.
This production has been an exciting challenge—not just because of its iconic music and fast-paced storytelling but also because it’s the first romance-driven musical I’ve directed. And let me tell you, getting middle schoolers to commit to a love story on stage? That’s the real gamble! But they’ve risen to the occasion, and the result is something truly special.
One of the best parts of directing is working with young people to create something greater than ourselves. Theatre is more than just memorizing lines and hitting marks—it’s about collaboration, creativity, and the shared magic of bringing the story to the stage. Seeing these students step into their roles with confidence and joy is the real jackpot.
Guys and Dolls is a show with old-school charm—big characters, sweeping melodies, and a script packed with wit. Thanks to Heather Joy for bringing those beautiful harmonies, Carl Johnson for constructing a set that makes me wish I lived in a 1950s New York musical, and Abby Thomas for taking our tech game to the next level.
So place your bets, sit back, and enjoy the show!
Sincerely,
Darden
