 Director's Note

Set sail with us on a musical adventure to “see the line where the sky meets the sea”. Based on the 2016 Disney film Moana, this thrilling and heartwarming stage adaptation embarks us on an epic journey of self-discovery and camaraderie. And with songs by Tony®, GRAMMY, Emmy, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina, the empowering message of bravery in Moana JR. is sure to awaken your inner hero.

Moana is a determined, caring, and brave young woman who becomes a hero for her community. As she sets sail across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage, she learns to harness the power that lies within. Whether it is the villagers she works hard to protect, the family she hopes to make proud, the friendships she grows and nourishes, or the ancestors she strives to honor, Moana is motivated in everything she does by her selfless desire to help others.

The lyrics and the story of Moana have been a great model for these young people beginning to shape their sense of self. The care and bravery that the actors and crew have used in developing their characters and skills have brought to life a new sense of confidence and hope. They have grown as artists and friends through this journey in ways that I hope will stay with them and exist in times of struggle and hardship throughout their life. I have had the privilege to assist, and honor the opportunity to have witnessed, their understanding that “the people you love will change you; the things you have learned will guide you.” And I thank you for allowing us to share this experience.
