 Director's Note

Dear Audience,

Next to Normal explores the complex and sensitive topic of mental illness. As the director of this production, I am honored to present a show that challenges us to confront the stigmas surrounding mental health and encourages us to have difficult conversations about the struggles that many people face on a daily basis.

Through the compelling story of the Goodman family, Next to Normal takes us on an emotional journey that explores the effects of mental illness on both the individual and their loved ones. We witness the highs and lows of their individual lives as they try to navigate through the challenges of bipolar disorder, depression, grief, loss, and more. The show’s powerful and poignant score captures the emotional depth and complexity of the characters’ experiences and invites us to connect with them on a deeper level.

As you watch this production, I encourage you to be open to the difficult truths that it presents. While mental illness can be a challenging topic to discuss, it is a reality that affects many of us in one way or another. Through our understanding and compassion, we can work to break down the barriers that prevent those who are struggling from seeking the help and support they need.

I am immensely proud of the talented cast, and they have been such a joy to direct. I am so grateful to them and to the crew who have brought this show to life through their dedication and hard work. I hope that you will be moved, entertained, and inspired by Next to Normal, and that it will leave a lasting impact on you long after the cast takes their final bow.

“When we open up our lives, sons and daughters, husbands, wives, and fight that fight, there will be light.”

Thank you for joining us today.

Sincerely,

Justin DeLong, Director
