Footloose - April 03 - April 06, 2025

Towson High Law & Public Policy

  Director’s Note

Growing up in a musical family in the late '80s and early '90s, I was introduced to the iconic film Footloose by my mother at an early age, and I can remember dancing and singing along to the Kenny Loggins’ song everytime it came on the radio. The stage adaptation of Footloose was also my first real production on stage in high school which started a lifelong career in, and appreciation for, vocal and theatre arts.

When choosing a show for this year, we wanted to follow up the important, historical, local, and still-timely story of Hairspray with one like Footloose while still highlighting the abundance of talent at Towson High School. Footloose became a top choice because of its focus on bonding through shared experiences, listening to young voices, and the power of community. In a time where there are many forces constantly working to divide us, we felt it was important to produce a show where the younger generation learns how to use their voices to communicate, engage in productive dialogue, and enact change.

Beyond the abundance of energy and top '80s hits in the show, like Footloose, Holding Out For A Hero, and Let’s Hear It For The Boy, this story offers an important look into how a community struggles with and moves on from grief, how power structures and demands can interfere with family dynamics, and how loss can sometimes trigger the worst in folks. We hope you leave our show with a tune in your head, a kick in your step, and an appreciation for the family and communities that you are a part of in your heart.

Thank you for joining us and for your constant support of the Towson High School Performing Arts Program.

Mr. Andrew Worthington
