Disney's High School Musical - April 14 - April 17, 2016

Towson High School

 End Notes

For me, high school theatre is a place where students can temporarily retreat from daily life into a world that is distinctly "other.” Here we create - and for a time live in - an alternate reality. How fortunate we are to present that reality as entertainment to friends and family who fill our audiences. The hardworking students that make up the actors, singers, and tech crew theatre are champions of this escape. They work remarkably hard to sustain a place where designers, actors, and technicians can come together to build something unique – and present the results to you. Our common goal is that for a few hours of your time, you too can transcend to that “other” place where life is enchanting, obstacles seem impossible, and life is both heartbreaking and heroic.

As the director, the greatest challenge with High School Musical is to present the musical in a way that is honest to the script and yet finds new elements in the story to keep it fresh. As you have noticed, the stage version of this show is quite different than the movie. The show is very unique in that the show is an overestimation of high school. The characters are exaggerated stereotypes which allows everyone to relate in some way.

There were several moments where I was worried that things would not come together for this production. Every production has its obstacles and challenges, but when it all comes down to it, I am so grateful for having the honor to work with this amazing group of students. They have reminded me that “we’re all in this together” and “when we reach we can fly!” I appreciate everyone involved for making my first musical at Towson High School a success. I appreciate all of the countless hours of dedication I have gotten from the cast, crew, Theatre Boosters, Bill, Sarah, Derrick, Mariam, Basile, Ladan and my family and friends. It would not be the same without any of my hoops boys J Break a leg HSM!
