Get Smart - April 23

Trinity Academy of Raleigh

 Director's Note

It is hard to believe that Trinity is rapidly approaching the end of our 2020-2021 school year. And what a year it has been, particularly for performing arts programs nationwide! This week, our school community will enjoy the first Trinity arts performances attended by a live audience in 18 months - our MS Choral Concert and MS Spring Play. I'm so grateful you are here with us to celebrate these students and their artistic achievements!

This year, I have stepped back into teaching and directing after a six-year hiatus. During that time, I created my favorite productions to date (and forever), my three children Brooks, Cora, and Lucy. Trinity Academy has proven to be a beautiful and timely gift to the Lye family, both to myself as an educator and to Jeff's and my children as lower school students here. My children's love of spies and imaginary acts of espionage served as some of the inspiration for my choice of GET SMART as this year's middle school play.

I believe our beloved, bumbling hero would feel right at home in the craziness of these students' production week! Due to COVID, both spring theatrical productions moved dates, giving my middle school students a few less weeks to prepare than we would normally have had. This very week, several of our amazing sophomore theatre student volunteers were quarantined and we have scrambled to replace lighting operators and stage management. Avery Alexander and Mason Miller, thank you for the work you had already given toward making GET SMART a success. We will miss having you with us this weekend!

Though navigating the usual stresses of a production week and now a few new challenges, these 7th and 8th graders have persevered with determination, joy, and more than a little pluck. I couldn't be prouder of all they've achieved. To my middle school actors and crew, thank you for pressing in and working as a true team to bring this story to life on stage this weekend. You're all ninjas in my book.

With gratitude,
