Hadestown: Teen Edition - November 20 - November 22, 2025

Union High School

 DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Hadestown was first developed in 2006 by Anais Mitchell. Any correlation to the current political climate, including the song "Why We Build the Wall", bears no relevance to any statement made by me or this theatre program regarding a political stance. The salute to Hades used at the end of the song was created by the cast and is the sign-language letter of "H."

More relationally, THIS is the last time that Tim Siess and I will be working together. A couple years ago, we thought Annie might be our final show together. But as time unfolded, I realized I might be able to talk him into another performance. I introduced Lori Collier and Tim Siess to Hadestown when I told them I'd like to try it. (I love this musical through and through.) "It might be one of the most difficult shows on the market... emotionally, musically, technically... so want to try it?" And here we are.

The three of us have worked together for over 14 years and produced over 8 mainstage musicals including Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof, Cinderella, Wizard of Oz, High School Musical, Shrek the Musical and Annie. To say we are a "well-oiled machine" at this point would not be an overstatement. I would tend to argue that although we have made some excellent work over these past years, this production is probably our magnus opus.

"Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life."

"Colleagues who become friends are the best kind of colleagues."

Thank you Tim, Lori and Adam

Tim - thank you for the incredible memories and experiences. I wish you nothing but the best in retirement. May you relax daily and never think about high school again. Lori - thank you for your laughter, your genuine heart and your friendship. Adam - thank you for the incredible advice to buy new mics and sound equipment, your humor and helping me with all things technical. To all three - thank you for "helping me make magic."

To my students, you deserve all the praise for your hard work, your vulnerability and your conviction. Remember, when you put your heart into something so completely, "the Sun, in turn, burns twice as bright."

I hope you enjoy this show as much as we have enjoyed preparing it for you. To my family who I haven't seen much of in the past couple months, I love you.
