 A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTORS

Welcome to the 67th Annual Scope and Scalpel!

We are both so excited to have you all join us in honoring the Class of 2021 with an evening of fun and laughter. We first want to thank those of you who have worked tirelessly on the frontlines each and every day this year. This evening is made possible because of your sacrifice to keep us all safe. This production consists of a vaccinated cast and crew who will be following CDC guidelines.

When we sat down to write the first draft of our show a year ago, we were in a world of uncertainty. Our classmates in the Class of 2020 had done an amazing job of suddenly adjusting to the world of Zoom and green screens. However, we felt we were stuck in an in-between place, knowing we’d be performing over a year into the pandemic – would this be a live show, a movie, or something in-between?

The structure of this show comes as a result of that internal conflict. We decided to narrow the focus and tell an intimate story of five medical student caricatures – who hopefully become something more than that by the end of the show. The musical numbers you will see are meant to be a result of our characters’ imaginations, and we feel so excited to have the opportunity to be able to perform them live, together, onstage.

This show is also a true love letter to musical theater. Every number that will be performed tonight comes from a stage or movie musical. Some may be familiar, while several will likely be new to you – we hope this sparks some of you to explore many of the shows we pay tribute to and love them as much as we do.

Scope and Scalpel is such a special opportunity to come together as a class one last time to put on a spectacular show, and we feel lucky to have the opportunity to do it in-person. We dedicate this show to all frontline workers, researchers who made the vaccines a reality, and all who felt like they needed an imaginative escape in such a trying and difficult year.

We hope you enjoy the show,

Bryce Churilla and Megan Raymond
