When thinking of a quintessential story of your childhood, chances are, emotions
that are activated when reminiscing are much like those of a grandfather telling a
fishing story to a grandchild. Our memory inflates what really happened. There is
something slightly unrealistic to the memory, like old reel-to-reel home movies.
It’s as if the colors and tints are slightly distorted, images are a little staticky, and
sometimes the ‘tempo’ goes a little awry with stutters and stops but then speeds
up. But through it all, these memories and emotions encourage self-reflection
and a sense of comfort because life experience provides new perspectives on old
events. Tim Clue and Spike Manton’s Leaving Iowa explores how working
to reconcile the past leads to the unpredictable journey of self-forgiveness.
Lessons are learned, appreciation gained, and negative feelings of guilt connected
to it all are released… “you betcha, you betcha”.
