I am thrilled that my twentieth musical at Wabasha-Kellogg is The Little Mermaid! This year also celebrates fifty years of musicals at Wabasha-Kellogg High School. I am humbled and excited to be a part of this thriving program.
This show has been a thrilling production to create. We feel so fortunate to be able to present this musical in its full capacity after having to make modifications and changes over the last two years.
Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.
There are over 45 students in 7th-12th grade that have been working on this musical for the past twelve weeks. We hope that you will enjoy the culmination of our hard work and effort. The rehearsal process creating this show has been very successful and momentous. I am very proud of all of them for working together to create “Disney” magic and upholding the strong tradition of great theatre at Wabasha-Kellogg. Additionally, I am also proud of my seniors who will be taking their final bow on the W-K stage this weekend. I am proud of all of their accomplishments.
I am thankful to all of our cast, parent, and community volunteers who have put in countless hours in creating costumes, building sets, painting scenery, and helping us along the way. We have an outstanding directing team for this year’s show.
I want to take a moment to thank Lynn Johnson for her many years of service as a teacher and as my assistant director in the W-K Drama department. Lynn has costumed hundreds of students over the years and has managed thousands of costumes in her time at our school. In addition, she has been a great co-captain in the “drama ship!” We are hoping she will return in some capacity next year. I want to take a moment to celebrate her accomplishments and contributions to our program. Thank you Lynn!
It takes a village to create a theatre! When the production closes on Sunday, I know our students will have such fond memories of this experience. Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible. Also, thank you for taking the time to support artistic expression and live theater.
Thank you for being a part of our world. We hope that you enjoy a few hours under the sea!
