The Seussification of a Midsummer Night's Dream - December 09 - December 10, 2016

Waterford High School

 End Notes

“The stage is a magic circle where only the most real things happen, a neutral territory outside the jurisdiction of Fate where stars may be crossed with impunity. A truer and more real place does not exist in all the universe.” -

P.S. Baber, Cassie Draws the Universe

Teaching Theatre Arts is the dream of many an English teacher and I can imagine no sweeter dream than being able to do so here, at Waterford High School. As a student I acted in many plays, including "Meet the Creeps," "Help! I'm Trapped In A High School!" and "Robin Hood." I also worked lights and sound for a variety of productions, including  the musical, "Fame!" and the drama "Big Boys Don't Cry." I thought that those memories would reign supreme within my mind as some of the most fun and hilarious times of my life.

I was wrong.

Directing these students has been a true joy. Seeing their passion and talent come alive on stage has been a privilege. As a first time director we all learned together, and they were excellent teachers. The process of creating this show was truly the work of an ensemble, we each took turns teaching, guiding, directing, and advising one another. Of course, there were many struggles. The size of Waterford High School is one of the things which most attracted me to the school, but it is also something which makes fielding a cast difficult. So I am especially grateful for those students who stepped up to fill roles when we find ourselves in need.

I would like to take a moment to thank Patrick Wills for his insight and advice regarding our lighting, Melinda Navarrete for her assistance with creating props, and Lezlie Acker for her generous loan of our set pieces. "The show must go on" as they say, but without their contributions it would not be the wonderful production that it is.

I hope that you enjoy our show tonight. It has been a labor of love for both the students and me, made of equal parts labor and love. I am incredibly proud of the cast and crew for the work they have done and look forward to our Spring production.

Best Wishes,

Tricia Garcia
