was born and raised in Hawaii and attended Yale University. As a performer: Godspell (Off-Broadway), Pippin (Broadway), The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (New York Shakespeare Festival), more than 100 commercials. As a lyricist: "Fame" (Academy Award), "Footloose," "Let's Hear It for the Boy," "After All" (love theme from Chances Are)—all Academy Award nominations; "All the Man That I Need," "You Should Hear How She Talks About You," etc. As a screenwriter: Footloose (Paramount), Sing (Tri-Star), The Washing Machine Man (Showtime). As a director: The Washing Machine Man, Bloodbrothers (Winner Cable Ace Award).

received the Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics' Circle Awards as best director for Chicago. He has since directed two American tours and productions in London and Australia. Former artistic director of City Center's acclaimed Encores! series, which received a New York Drama Critics Awards in 1996. Other directing: For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls at EST, Durang Durang at MTC, and Nude Nude Totally Nude at the NYSF. Conceived and directed Rodgers and Hammerstein's A Grand Night for Singing at Rainbow & Stars and the Roundabout Theater. Broadway and Off-Broadway: Guys and Dolls, Assassins, Getting Married, Anything Goes, Driving Miss Daisy, the original Grease, and the GMHC benefit Anyone Can Whistle at Carnegie Hall. Film and television: The First Wives Club, Stephen King's Thinner, HBO's Edie and Pen, Hill Street Blues, L.A. Maw, The Equalizer, Law & Order, NYPD Blue. has written hits for Bonnie Raitt, Selena, Linda Ronstadt, The Pointer Sisters, Barry Manilow, Diana Ross, and many others. His long association with Dean Pitchford has yielded multiple Academy and Grammy Award nominations. Tom is the recipient of the Emmy Award for Best Theme Music in an Original Series. He is the principal songwriter and co-producer of the soundtrack for Disney's animated sequel to The Lion King. His songs have been heard by millions around the world in films, on radio and television, and in concert. Special thanks to Dean; it's been great fun getting here!
