Welcome to Westfield Summer Stage's production of Beauty and the Beast! We are so happy to have you with us this evening as we venture into a story of enchantment and whimsy.
Beauty and the Beast is a musical with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book by Linda Woolverton. Adapted from Walt Disney Pictures' Academy Award-winning 1991 animated musical film of the same name - which in turn had been based on the classic French fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont - Beauty and the Beast tells the story of a cold-hearted prince who has been magically transformed into an unsightly creature as punishment for his selfish ways. To revert back into his true human form, the Beast must first earn the love of a bright, beautiful young woman whom he has imprisoned in his enchanted castle before the spell remains forever.
It has been a pleasure working with this cast and crew of kind and talented students. They have taken on many new dances and songs in such a short period of time, but they have done it with great perseverance and a steadfast work ethic. This is a favorite show of mine and I am delighted that they have come along with me in creating one of Disney’s most magical stage productions. I am so incredibly proud of their dedication and fun-loving spirit. Bravo!
I would be remiss to not thank my production team. To my Stage manager and Assistant Stage Managers, thank you for keeping this show running like a well-oiled machine, you are fabulous. To Jonathan Blank, thank you for all of your dedication, and not to mention, the time and talent you devote to everyone, including myself. To my producers, thank you for being my team of all stars. You have helped in every possible aspect to make this show happen. I am truly humbled and grateful for your constant support. And last but never least, a big shout out to all the volunteers who helped build sets, make costumes, paint scenery, donated food and so much more. Thank you for supporting our kids and our program!
