Changes, Challenges, and Theatre
This certainly has been an interesting year – filled with changes, filled with challenges, and, thankfully, filled with theatre. The middle school troupe had a very successful year with our contest show I Never Saw Another Butterfly. At the high school regional held at Hobart High School, we finished second and, for the first time ever, advanced to State where we competed against the winners of the other high school regionals and, of course, Munster’s troupe, who finished ahead of us at the Hobart regional. At State, we finished eighth, ahead of two of the nine high schools who were also performing at state.
Because of the time devoted to prepping for State, we lost a significant amount of rehearsal time for our spring show. This made it difficult to do our usual full length comedy, so we did something completely different – instead of one long show, why not do ten short shows and feature all of the students in starring roles? It would provide an opportunity for students who have understood the importance of smaller and ensemble roles and have willingly accepted them, their chance to be in the spotlight.
It has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for both the students and me. How do you do ten shows with ten sets in less than two hours? Although a simple set is required; it is not simple to do. Tonight you will see students rearrange the same 5-9 wooden cubes into the ten different worlds their characters live in. Please sit back and enjoy imagination and creativity at it finest.
