The Wizard of Oz (RSC 1987) - April 15 - May 01, 2021

Wilmington High School

 End Notes

From the Director...

I am excited to present The Wizard of Oz to you.  The story is over 100 years old and the live 1939 movie created memories to last a lifetime.  Iconic characters, unforgettable scenery, and quotable lines still used today.  This show is a staple in our culture.  At a time when people need support and encouragement from others the themes in The Wizard of Oz are an example of the importance of friendship and helping others.

Like Dorothy, the students worked hard to overcome many obstacles this year.  At times we were unsure if we would be able to perform a live musical.  Together we figured it out.  In the theatre, ultimately the goal is to  perform a live production.  However, it is often the journey which provides the most rewards for the students.

Everyone worked extremely hard along the way.  Like the Fab 4 (Dororthy, Scarecrow, Tinman, Lion) our cast and crew faced many challenges as well.  As a cast and crew we dealt with illness, injury, complicated schedules and the isolation of quarentine.  But we persevered and kept moving forward.

Our crew tackled the difficult task of telling the story by taking us to various locations.  We travel to Kansas, a cornfield, the forest, the Emerald City, a Witches castle and many other places.  They stepped in and quickly learned their roles in order to make this production a success.

Our hope is for the audience to escape life for a while and go on this journey with us down the yellow brick road.  A journey filled with hope and joy.  A journey that will bring a smile to your face even if that smile is hidden behind a mask.  A journey that includes songs to sing along with, costumes to brighten your day, and dances to be amazed by.

Thank you all for your support on this production and with our entire theatre program at Wilmington High School.

Sincerely,

Ken Lydy

Director
