The history of race in America is two stories: The first is the story of black suffering, courage, resistance and resilience. The second is the story of white people allowing racism and complicity to infect and corrupt the society we attempted to build, and the history we tell about that society.
At the heart of this production team are two white theater-makers. We feel a moral obligation to tell the second story — that is the traffic of our stage tonight. We also feel a deep desire to support the first story — it is not ours to tell, but it is of profoundest importance. There are black theater-makers who are doing that essential work, and we would like to acknowledge them and call you to seek out that theater:
Playwright and director Phaedra Scott provided the dramaturgy for EFFIGY. Find her at www.phaedrascott.com.
Black Theater United is slated to offer reforms to Broadway in a New Deal, establishing industry-wide standards for equity
and diversity. www.blacktheatreunited.com
We See You, White American Theater is a collective of BIPOC theater artists working to transform the American stage through building anti-racist theatrical systems. www.weseeyouwat.com

The work doesn’t end here. Any Revolution that does not actively seek a just and equitable world will crumble.
Thank you for your time,
