Director's Notes

In the heart of "Act A Lady," a play that unfolds in the 1920s, Jordan Harrison weaves a compelling narrative that challenges conventional gender roles and explores the complexity of identity through the transformative power of theater. As the director of this poignant piece, I am deeply committed to bringing forth the layers of LGBTQ+ themes and the broader spectrum of diversity that are intrinsically embedded within the script. Our production aims to not only entertain but to enlighten, offering a mirror to the past that reflects upon the present struggles and triumphs within the LGBTQ+ community as well as our current societal structure.

The essence of "Act A Lady" lies in its bold exploration of gender fluidity and the performative aspects of gender, long before these conversations became part of the mainstream dialogue. By setting the play in a time when such topics were taboo, Harrison provides a unique lens through which we can examine our current understanding and acceptance of diverse identities. Our approach to this production is rooted in authenticity and respect for the characters’ journeys, aiming to create a space where the audience can engage with the nuanced realities of being true to oneself in a world that demands conformity. It is a celebration of the courage it takes to defy societal norms, to dress and act beyond the binary, encapsulating the spirit of the LGBTQ+ movement's ongoing fight for visibility and acceptance.

Moreover, "Act A Lady" serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusion, not only on stage but in all facets of life. This production is a testament to the strength found in embracing one's identity and the beauty of human diversity. Through the lens of a small-town 1920s community attempting a daring theatrical experiment, we invite our audience to reflect on their perceptions of gender, identity, and performance. It is my hope that this play will inspire conversations, challenge prejudices, and contribute to a more inclusive and understanding society. Our commitment to these themes is unwavering, as we believe that theater is not just an art form but a medium for social change, capable of fostering empathy and promoting a world where everyone can Act a Lady, or not, as they see fit.
