At the heart of all the spectacle in the show is a story about a family coming together…
This line from the Mary Poppins production handbook stuck out to me, and has been my mantra throughout this creative process. I have to admit that I was a little intimidated taking on such a spectacle of a show, but reading that line during my prep work reminded me of why I love Mary Poppins so much. The original movie, the staged musical you’re watching today, as well as the most recent movie have all resonated with me in different ways. Throughout all those renditions, the one common thread is a magical and entertaining story about a nanny who helps a family overcome the complexities of life.
A show in itself has many complexities, and this production would not have been possible without the many hands and helpers. Thank you to the amazing leaders of YAT - Jean, Jess, Kristina, and the rest of the board for always championing my creative vision and lending an ear during the stressful moments. To my super artistic team: Ricardo for creating such beautiful storytelling through dance, Matt for the continued skill of making our young actors sound amazing, and Jerrica and the stage management team for organizing the creative chaos we call live theatre. To all the crew, your tireless work makes our shows happen, and without you the magic would not be the same. To all the committee chairs and parent volunteers: we could not have done it without you!
Finally, to the cast: I hope you enjoyed your experience in this show as much as I have. And to you, the audience, I leave you with the words of Mary Poppins:
