About the Play
The play is set on February 2 (Groundhog Day) in Indiana PA, home of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Between Panic and Desire began life as a title derived from the playwright's amusement from a sign on Route 119 north of Indiana and Punxsutawney (see play's logo). Punxy is famous as the home of a weather-predicting groundhog named Phil. In the years after first seeing the sign, the playwright acquired several mental and physical disabilities that rendered him unemployable. He turned to the title as a springboard to create a character with similar experiences. The play developed keeping in mind people in the USA who reject provable facts and embrace unsubstantiated misinformation to shape their reality. However, it is not a political statement. The play is about three adult siblings whose memories may be more real than their present.
