Fiddler on the Roof Jr. - November 15 - November 19, 2018

Ascent Academies of Utah

 Director's Note

Fiddler on the Roof Jr  is a very special story.  Our characters teeter on the edge of a new world, grasping towards their faith and traditions to hold them steady.  Highlighted in our production are the themes of family and connection across community lines.  Through Tevye's eyes we confront deep and meaningful questions about our own personal beliefs and how those beliefs shape our treatment of others. As a parent Tevye has dreams and ambitions for his children; he hopes they will have a life better than his own.  It is this hope that drives Tevye to love and support his family, even though their choices ultimately deviate from the path their father envisions.

Learning to love those who believe differently from ourselves can be challenging, especially when those beliefs are as ingratiated into everyday life as they are for the people of Anatevka. We see what happens when those differences of faith are put to the test both within Tevye's immediate family, and the community of Anatevka at large.  Passively tolerating another's way of life isn't enough to keep life in balance, and at the end of the play tensions boil over.

Though the story may end on a note of sadness, the characters walk away filled with hope for an uncertain future. As a director I want you too to walk away from this performance feeling hopeful.  Recognizing that even in what appear to be the darkest of times, there is light from those we love most.

 Special Thanks

A HUGE thank you to everyone who spent hours and hours working on this

show. Thanks to our music director Sarah Fawcett for helping these kids sound impeccable up on that stage.   Sosha Tanner and Shauntelle Stephenson gave up weeks of their time to make these kids look incredible.  Without their above-and-beyond effort our show would not have come together and your students would not look and feel like the rockstars they are.  ALL THE PARENTS who put in hours helping sell tickets and concessions, sewing costumes, driving kids back-and-forth, and always being positive about our show. Special thanks to Julie Miller for coordinating our parent efforts. And of course thanks to Mr. Reid, the Office Staff, and all the Teachers here at Ascent for their endless support of our Drama program!
