11 Minutes Theatre

 Directors Notes

Throughout my entire life, violence has really unsettled me. I know that I am not alone in this reaction, yet we are surrounded by violence everyday; from the images we see on the news, our movies and television programming, world events and even happenings in our own community. I believe that theatre allows people to share in such reactions and experiences, and to provoke conversation and dialogue, even if it is uncomfortable. This sense of community is something I truly believe in and one of the reasons that I began 11 Minutes Theatre.

I struggled with this piece; mostly because I couldn't explain why I was so intrigued by it. I would be lying if I stated that I completely understood why Martin McDonagh chose such gruesome material to be portrayed on stage. One explanation I can offer reaches back to the Greek’s sense of modern theatre: that telling the “story” is our way to purge and avoid the actual (violent) act. It is appropriate then that it is through story telling that much of the violence in this play occurs. The stories are reminiscent of fairytales that we heard as children. While many of these fairytales are indeed quite horrific, they also speak to the presence and desire to protect that which is innocent in our world. Story telling is an art and there is a ritual involved in it. Every character in this play has one or many stories to tell, and I invite you to explore the roles of violence, purging and innocence in their stories.
