Director’s Notes
Some of my earliest memories are of sitting in front of our little round screen black and white television set. We watched “Texaco Star Theater”, “You Bet Your Life”, “I Love Lucy”, “Our Miss Brooks” and “Your Show of Shows”. We did not realize that we were in a golden age of television, just that whatever we saw we loved. But Sid Caesar was such a giant in the world of comedy, he deserves a hallowed place among these early productions. Neil Simon invites us into the insane room where such greatness was crafted. Sid Caesar was a comic genius who had impeccable timing and was able to parody anything that his eyes saw around him. His real genius, however, was assembling this incredible team of writers that went on to define quality comedy for decades. The names may have been changed to protect the innocent, but they are all guilty of the best humor in the American tradition. I wonder if in our current atmosphere of political correctness we can ever really laugh at ourselves so well again.
