The Intern Co. began life in 2003 as Footlighters’ theatre education program for high school and college students. At that time, students interested in the performing arts had far fewer opportunities during the summer months. Intern Co. challenged students to not only act in a production but design the set and manage all marketing and publicity – to really take ownership of the production.

In year 7, the Intern Co. changed. That summer, the Interns adapted The Odyssey from a BBC Radio script. The play was about a voyage from Greece, battles with monsters, magic spells and enchantment. It was big!

From that year forward, Intern Co. has presented our area’s young adult artists with challenging material and encouraged them to invent their own style of theatre. From composing a score to experimenting with different kinds of staging, the Intern Co. is about taking risks and finding freedom.

Ten years after The Odyssey, we are back on the Black Sea, examining the classic legend of Jason & the Argonauts in Mary Zimmerman’s brilliant, fun and moving Argonautika.  This year’s Interns have risen to the challenge of adding a cappella music (“Sing in us, Muse…”), created adventure sequences both comic and tragic, and examined love and death and what it means to be alive.

Welcome aboard, and enjoy the journey!
