Chabot College

 TO THE AUDIENCE

A Message from the Theater Department

In this year of Covid, theaters around the world have had to invent new ways of developing and delivering story-telling content. Typically we would be offering several plays over the school year, inviting audiences in to Stage One on the Chabot campus. But, with the theater closed, audiences unable to attend, and actors unable to meet in person to rehearse, we had to get creative. This year we have 6 events we are creating that will use technology in differing ways, giving our theater students the opportunity to continue to grow and learn. Some events will be live via Zoom, some recorded remotely on camera, and some as radio play podcasts.

Whatever the form of media we are using, our goal is to provide compelling, relevant and entertaining story-telling to our audiences. It is worth noting that all of our content this year will be original, some written by students and some by faculty.

We would like to extend our gratitude to you for being here to for this performance. Whether you are a student, friend or family of a cast member, or someone from the community looking to see some theater, we appreciate you making the time to be here. Putting together a play virtually is a huge challenge and the pay-off is being able to share it with you. So thank you for joining us!

About Theater Arts at Chabot College

Theater Arts at Chabot is dedicated to serving theater students, the campus community and the community at large. In addition to courses in all the many areas of theater; Acting, Writing, Directing, Technical Theater, Voice, Movement, History and more, we offer a wide range of theater productions. Our mainstage theater productions give students the opportunity to use all the skills they are learning in other courses and apply them under the guidance of a faculty director.

Students in theater at Chabot also have the opportunity to mount original student written and directed plays through our Emerging Work course. This course offers students the chance to see their own original work realized in performances for the public - a valuable and enriching experience for all theater artists, especially ones just starting out. Some of the productions in this course have gone on to win awards and have life beyond Chabot. While studies in Theater Arts at Chabot College advance a student’s abilities as a theater artist, they also contribute to the growth of the whole person. Collaboration, creativity, problem solving under stress, critical thinking, personal responsibility, are just of a few of the things participation
in theater helps a student develop. Though many of our students go on to further study in theater as well as becoming professionals in the field, all of our students carry the lessons and memories they learned from the challenges of theater in to whatever they do next.
