A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR GLADYS RAMÍREZ

Welcome to Carmen Rivera's "La Gringa," a heartfelt exploration of identity,  connection, and the quest to belong. As a first-generation American born to parents who immigrated from Peru, directing this beautifully told and poignant comedy has been a deeply personal journey for me. This production, chosen by our Artistic Director, Margaret M. Ledford, recognizes the significance of bringing "La Gringa" to Miami for its premiere after a remarkable 27-year run Off-Broadway. "La Gringa" tells the story of Maria Elena Garcia, a young woman searching for her place in the world, caught between the complexities of being a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico. The phrase "ni de aquí, ni de allá" resonates profoundly — a sentiment that speaks to the hearts of many who have navigated the intricate dance of straddling two cultures. This production is dedicated to everyone who has ever felt "ni de aquí, ni de allá" — neither from here nor from there. It is for those of us who have grappled with questions of identity, belonging, and the profound beauty that arises when we embrace our cultural heritage. In the spirit of our diverse community in Miami, "La Gringa" invites you to laugh, reflect, and celebrate our shared human experience. May this play serve as a reminder that our essence goes beyond borders and definitions, residing in the beating heart of our shared humanity.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

City Theatre acknowledges the lands and waterways on which we create theatre are ancestral, traditional, and contemporary homelands of sovereign Native Nations. We offer our respect and gratitude to the Seminole, Miccosukee, Taino, and Tequesta people as the original stewards of the land and appreciate the ongoing relationship Indigenous people maintain with the land to this day. It is important to recognize the violence, dispossession, and removal that has scarred this land, as well as the resiliency and strength of Native Nations. This acknowledgment reflects our sincere commitment to recognizing the historical and ongoing legacy of colonialism and honoring Indigenous people everywhere.
