James & the Giant Peach Jr. - June 05 - June 06, 2026

Dynamic Youth Theatre

 A Note from the Director

Welcome to James and the Giant Peach Jr. This is a story about loss, hope, courage…and yes, one very giant piece of fruit.

When I first began imagining this production, I kept coming back to one question: What if this entire world lived inside James' imagination?

In our production, James is more than the hero of the story, he is its storyteller. Through his eyes, chalk drawings come to life, ordinary moments become extraordinary adventures, and loneliness transforms into possibility. The world you see onstage is shaped by the imagination of a child trying to make sense of loss, searching for connection, and dreaming of a family again.

The insects in James's journey are quirky, hilarious, wonderfully imperfect companions, but in many ways, they represent something deeper: the love, guidance, protection, humor, and belonging James has lost and desperately longs for. Each bug offers him something he is missing, helping him slowly rediscover trust, courage, and joy.

Even the darker parts of James's world hold meaning. Spiker and Sponge are certainly outrageous and larger than life, but they also represent something many children understand all too well…fear, loneliness, feeling unseen, or being made to feel small. In James's imagination, those fears become exaggerated, theatrical, and even absurd, because sometimes storytelling is how we make sense of the hardest things. In this story, imagination becomes not an escape from pain, but a way through it.

I am honored to direct this incredible company of young performers for DYT's inaugural show. They have embraced every bit of the wonder, humor, and heart in this story. With imagination leading the way, they have helped create a world where dreams quite literally come to life, and I could not be prouder of the joy, courage, and creativity they bring to the stage.

So tonight, I invite you to see the world through James's eyes. Laugh loudly, dream boldly, and remember that the things we imagine often reveal what we need the most.

Enjoy the adventure,

Jennifer Hammond
