Mrs. Doris Goble, Director
We are so proud to bring NEWSIES - a high-energy musical filled with haunting melodies and fantastic dance sequences - to the Eastbrook stage. This musical is based on the true story of the children who sold newspapers on the streets of New York. We have fallen in love with this show - with its energy, its music, its characters, and its message.
Davey and Jack will remind us tonight: Behold the brave battalion that stands side by side. Too few in number, and too proud to hide. Then say to the others who did not follow through: “You’re still our brothers, and we will fight for you.”
Throughout this production, we have been challenged to seize the opportunity to speak for those who cannot, to fight for those who dare not. We have been reminded that this world is simply better when we dare to move, when we seize the day.
Enjoy this beautiful show.

Newsies is one of my favorites! The first time I saw it I fell in love with the music, the camaraderie of the characters, and of course the dancing! During this production I have found a new love: the character of Katherine, a witty young woman of privilege who chooses to see the world with a critical eye and uses her privilege to impact others and her community. Katherine seeks to use words to create change—not just headlines and a bottom-line. She continually challenges Jack to see the bigger picture: “With those words, the strike stopped being just about the Newsies. You [Jack] challenged our whole generation to stand up and demand a place at the table.” And my favorite: “Being boss doesn’t mean you have all the answers, just the brains to recognize the right one when you hear it.” Katherine doesn’t simply seek and speak the truth, she empowers others to do the same.
Mrs. Tabitha Delong, Music Director
It has been a fun experience working with the students on the Newsies music. I have been very proud of the students holding their own harmony parts, especially when the choreography was added. Musically, this cast has been awesome to teach! They project their voices well and aren't afraid to go for their notes! I like the quote: "Courage can not erase our fear, courage is when we face our fear." This concept can be applied to every aspect of life. Fear doesn't just disappear, but it's how we approach that fear and overcome it. This is a fun show and I'm excited to see it all come together!
Mr. Joel Walters, Orchestra Director
In this show, there are so many great life lessons that can be learned about perseverance and standing for what is right. I really enjoy the song The World Will Know and its play on words as the newsies are not just standing up to the Mr. Pulitzer at "The World” newspaper, but also to everyone else to prove their worth. This is a message that I think resonates in our current time. Real change can come from working hard and standing for what you believe in.
