The new musical, Freaky Friday, based on the beloved 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films (and developed by Disney Theatrical Productions expressly for licensing to theatres), features a book by Bridget Carpenter - the co-executive producer and writer on the beloved TV hits, "Friday Night Lights" and "Parenthood" - and music and lyrics by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey - the Pulitzer Prize-winning composers of Next to Normal and If/Then.
When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic, and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic. By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another's struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.
Mrs. Chandler introduced this musical to me this year and I admit that I was skeptical at first because I was unfamiliar with the musical version of Freaky Friday, in addition, it would require modern motifs and dancing that was also outside of my wheelhouse. After having watched the movie, several stage versions, and Mrs. Chandler’s urging, I realized that this musical was perfect for our students this year. I think the musical’s message of putting ourselves in another’s shoes is so critical during this difficult time, and yet the musical presents this theme in such a fun uplifting way. We hope you enjoy the performance of Freaky Friday One Act Edition!
Thank you for your support!

"R.I.P., Newsies" has been an oft whispered phrase amongst the HFHS theatre students who were involved in the ill-fated HFHS musical of 2020, the year the world stopped due to the pandemic. There has been much grieving over a show that was so eagerly anticipated yet not to be, and much trepedation amidst so many unknowns we faced this current school year. I believe I can speak for the entire cast, crew, and directing team by stating that we are beyond THRILLED to present Freaky Friday to you tonight! We feel exceedingly blessed to have had the opportunity to fully attend school in person this year and to enjoy the incredible normalcy of producing a school musical.
While some safety restrictions remain in place, it is with a collective sigh of relief (quite literally) that we take the stage in this show with tons of heart, a little cheese, and so much love. I am deeply grateful to see our efforts come to fruition and to have been part of this amazing team of directors and outstanding cast and crew.
With much love and appreciation,
-Mrs. Chandler, Music Director
