"Well-behaved women seldom make history."
Laurel Thatcher Ulrich uttered this quote in 1976, the year of Mary McGrory celebrating her Pulitzer Prize for her Watergate reporting; Barbara Walters as the first female news anchor of a major network; and Barbara Jordan, the first woman, and African-American, to deliver a keynote address to the Democratic national convention after being the first female African-American from the South to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. This of course names only a few of many women - well-behaved, mis-behaved, and everything in between - who continue to inspire us today.
The song-cycle Well-Behaved Women written by Carmel Dean is a celebration of many historic women who fought to have their voices heard and bravely made their mark on the world. Women such as Eve, Cleopatra, Harriet Tubman, Frida Kahlo, Billie Jean King and Malala Yousafzai bring their incredible stories to life through powerful, emotional and often hilarious songs, leaving audiences entertained, moved and inspired.
Well-Behaved Women made its New York premiere at Joe’s Pub on January 25, 2020, in a one-night-only production featuring LaChanze, Liz Callaway, Barbara Walsh, Bonnie Milligan, Katie Thompson, Natascia Diaz, Kuhoo Verma and Melissa Rose Hirsch. On March 24, 2021, the musical revue premiered in Sydney, Australia at the Hayes Theatre. Since then it has received many productions around the world, all garnering rave reviews as a piece of theatre that is as moving and powerful as it is entertaining. https://www.concordtheatricals.com/p/93489/well-behaved-women
