Mamma Mia - May 10 - May 12, 2024

James Island Charter HS

 Directors' Notes

In our fast-paced, technological world, it's easy to forget the enduring power of love. Mamma Mia! may seem like a lighthearted escape with its catchy ABBA tunes, but underneath it all lies a powerful message – that love and connection are what truly matter.

This production has been a journey of growth and love for everyone involved. Our students have poured their hearts into it, sacrificing free time to master the choreography, vocals, and the art of creating a cohesive performance. Our directors have dedicated countless hours to make this show shine. We hope you feel our passion as you enter our Greek Taverna tonight.

This production wouldn't be possible without a dedicated team. Mr. Bateman, our Producer and Vocal Director, has been an invaluable partner. He's not only responsible for the beautiful music you'll hear on stage, but also for countless unseen details – from paperwork to ads and to the program you now hold. Most importantly, his ability to connect with and support students is truly inspiring. He brought smiles to even the most stressful rehearsals, a priceless quality in a teacher.

Our deepest gratitude goes to Mrs. Quinn, the costume, makeup, and prop mastermind. Her dedication to creating the perfect theatrical aesthetic is simply amazing. Huge thanks also to Mrs. Farrier and the technical theater class for building the fantastic Greek Taverna set. And to Dr. Bowles and our instrumentalists – their hard work and patience will fill this auditorium with music that will have the audience tapping its feet and singing along with Sophie and Donna.

Of course, this show wouldn't be possible without the unwavering support of our administration and faculty. We are incredibly grateful.

A special shoutout to our graduating seniors. While their peers may be mentally checked out, these students have been incredible leaders for this show, setting a fantastic example for the rest of the cast. Their commitment demonstrates incredible fortitude and character, qualities they'll carry far beyond this stage.

To our wonderful audience – thank you for your support. Parents, family, and friends make putting on shows like this worthwhile. We deeply appreciate you cheering on our students.

"Mamma Mia!" is a joyful, uplifting musical. We encourage you to laugh, sing along, and applaud with abandon. By the end of the night, we hope you'll understand the sentiment that connects us all: "Without a song or a dance, what are we?"
