SHREK DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Welcome to Shrek the Musical! This is an upbeat and unconventional fairytale that speaks to the heart and delights the senses. You’ll want to clap, and laugh, and tap your feet! Go for it. You may even cry a bit. That’s okay too.
We have just loved working with this material and bringing these characters to life. Each character, like each of you, has a “story” -- a personal narrative made of joys and sorrows, friendships and loneliness, openness and defenses. As the drama unfolds, we see that Shrek has been rejected by society and forced into isolation. He’s had to become strong and independent. He’s created a safe haven for himself. Life for him is okay, that is, until the fateful circumstances throw his ordered life into chaos and propel him into an adventure that is messy with relationship. Somehow within the heart of each person, we understand that, while isolation is often easier, we are intended for community. We are made to interact, to challenge one another, to sojourn.
As you see each character step off the pages of Life’s book and onto the stage, I hope that you too will see, as I did, how important friendship is and that you’ll be challenged anew to courageously step towards community in order that your true narrative may unfold. God bless you as you face your “walls” and learn to embrace this “big, bright, beautiful world.”
