Shirley Valentine - September 11 - September 28, 2013

 Directors Notes

The mid life crisis is often portrayed as a new sports car or a face lift that vainly attempts to relive lost youth.  Shirley Bradshaw (nee Valentine) takes us through an accounting of her life so far, and into her desire to recapture the energy and adventure of her youth.  What every reckoning in mid life should be: a frank, yet loving, look at what we’ve contributed and learned so far, and whatever it is that we’ve left behind that needs revisiting.  Shirley is all that, wrapped up in the often hilarious recollections of a Liverpool housewife in the late 1980’s.

42 isn’t even close to being old anymore, but I think we all hit that moment in life where we need a quick revue of the journey so far and a re-mapping for going forward, especially if we’ve gotten distracted from those passions that used to be so important that they filled our hearts and minds.

It has been a great journey to revive this popular production.  Many thanks to Randy for the original direction which I have built upon.  Seriously, he and Patricia worked out all the original timing for cooking the food live onstage every night!

I think you’ll find it difficult not to laugh and even cry with Shirley.  And I’m sure you will cheer her on as she charts a new direction in her life.  I hope you can enjoy and even learn from her ‘crisis’.  I know I have.
