Directors Notes
I love the story of Putnam County Spelling Bee because of the way it presents the
"Coming of Age" story. It's wit keeps you on your seat, the dialogue is quick and clever,
and this particular cast has worked hard to make you laugh until you cry. As I reflect
back on this past season at Mclaughlin, it would have made a wonderful spelling
candidate. We traveled to enough countries and counties to Speak 6 languages with our
productions of Aladdin, Fiddler, and Holiday Cabaret. We created some Magic with our
"Take a Seat" campaign, reaching our goal quicker than expected, and took some
creative risks, refining our crafts through the rigorous work of 13. And I can't help but
feel that here, at the finish line, Putnam is the perfect end of the season. SPOILER
ALERT: The Bee does NOT end at the trophy. (End spoiler) Putnam reflects on the AND
THEN, which may be the most important part of Art today. Art continues to show us
that it is not the end result that is important; it is what you do once you know the
story. Whether your goal is to win & take it all, live up to expectations, or own cats, the
important part is that you DO and be satisfied. Set those goals and break them! Hit
those high notes! Dance YOUR DANCE! Putnam (and MTC) tells you the story of how to
be happy being your authentic self, living up to your expectations, and laughing all the
way! Please enjoy MTC's Putnam County Spelling Bee!
