Big Fish School Edition - November 22 - November 24, 2024

Mineral Point High School

 Directors' Note

Big Fish School Edition has been a wonderful experience to produce. It is typical that as a team of directors, we are somewhat divided as to what shows that we would like to select for the following season. Considerations include what would be a good fit for the students we have in the program, the students' suggestions, and what shows we can logistically deliver in regards to ensemble size, acting demands, orchestral needs, costuming, set and prop requirements, and more. Big Fish has challenged our students in their story-telling, dancing, harmonizing, and varied types of characters. That being said, our students really rallied around this show, and we are so grateful that they did.

One of the biggest challenges we faced this season was losing our long-time scenic designer and set builder, Bill Duwell. He brought so much to our productions over the last several years and we are very grateful for his contributions to our program.  We would like to welcome Mr. Chad Walter and Mr. Daniel Nordstrom into the roles of Master Builder and Set Assistant Director. Mr. Walter's creativity and problem solving have been wonderful additions to the directors team.  We are thrilled to have Mr. Nordstrom's continued involvement in our program, as he was a dedicated performer throughout his own high school career.

A love letter to dads everywhere, Big Fish celebrates the complex relationship between fathers and sons, celebrating all the ways that they try to protect, inspire, and shape their children. In directing Big Fish, we have sought to balance the vibrancy of Edward Bloom’s fantastical worldview with the deeper journey each character takes through their life’s big moments. This tale reminds us that sometimes, the best way to understand a person is to embrace their stories—

not for their facts but for their heart.

At its heart, Big Fish explores the universal themes of family, legacy, love, and the power of imagination. The tale encourages audiences to question how we want to be remembered and what it means to truly understand the ones we love. This show is a wildly fun and emotional journey and we couldn’t be more delighted to bring our vision for this story to the stage.

On behalf of the cast, crew, and directors, we hope you enjoy this

whale of a tale as much as we have!
