A Message From the Director
Dear Patrons of Mt. Olive Drama Club,
I love this story! I read the novel about 12 years ago and I told our director of Language Arts, at the time, that we needed to add it to the curriculum. I gave her a copy of the book, and by the next school year, we had it in the curriculum. In my life during the school day, I am a special education teacher, when I’m not directing a play. I believe this gave me an insight into the struggles that our lead character faces every day. One of my passions is directing this drama club. However, another passion of mine is teaching my students every day. My students work so hard and try their best every day with some of the similar struggles that you will see from our lead character Christopher.
I began my career as a paraprofessional in a classroom for children with Autism as I was finishing college. These children immediately grabbed hold of my heart. My students continue to do so to this day. From the first time I stepped into my classroom 15 years ago, I knew that this was the right place for me to be. I love to watch my students grow from a struggle and learn from their mistakes. When they finally realize something or finally understand a difficult concept, there is no better feeling as a teacher, because I realize how hard they worked to achieve that.
This novel based play that you are about to see tonight will show you the daily struggle that someone with a disability faces every day of their lives. Not only do they struggle, but so do their family members and friends. After seeing this production, I want you to leave here realizing that these children can do what every other child can do. They want what every other child wants. Christopher’s last line in the show, as well as the last line of the novel, is, “I can do anything.” That is the message I give my students every day. Look past their disabilities, and focus on their abilities. All of my students continue to amaze me every day with their fortitude and determination in the Drama Club, as well as in my classroom.
I do hope you enjoy this show. But I also hope it helps those that do not understand the struggles that a person with disabilities, along with their families, faces every day.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the show!
Mr. Bosch
