Not So Common Players

 message from director

Welcome to Godspell.

When Stephen Schwartz’s iconic musical first premiered, it invited audiences into a joyful, rebellious, and profoundly human exploration of community, faith, and love. More than fifty years later, its message feels as timely and necessary as ever. At its core, Godspell is about building something greater than ourselves—about strangers becoming family, grace taking root in everyday places, and the sacred power of storytelling.

Directing this production has been an extraordinary journey. Our cast and creative team have poured their hearts into every lyric, laugh, and moment of vulnerability. We’ve laughed, questioned, created, and grown together as the characters onstage do. What you’ll see tonight isn’t just a performance; it’s a community in motion, a reflection of what can happen when people show up with open hearts and the courage to believe in one another.

To our audience: Thank you for joining us. Whether this is your first time seeing Godspell or your fifteenth, we hope this performance lifts your spirit, sparks reflection, and reminds you that even in times of uncertainty, love—and a little music—can still bring us together.

A special thank-you to the Not So Common Players board for entrusting me with the opportunity to direct this production. Your belief in me means more than words can express, and I’m genuinely grateful for your continued support and dedication to keeping theatre thriving in our community.

To my amazing production staff—thank you for your creativity, patience, and tireless work behind the scenes. And to the cast: thank you for your bravery, your heart, and the joy you bring to every moment. You’ve made this process unforgettable, and I couldn’t be prouder of the story we’re telling together.

Let’s build a Beautiful City.

With gratitude,
Mike Gatzendorfer
Director
