Since its premiere on Broadway in 2008, 13 the Musical has provided young performers with a show they can truly relate to, beautifully mirroring their own lives to the characters they are playing. This musical explores the ups and downs of growing up and the real consequences that come with letting peer pressure win! It’s about friendship, joy, fitting in, standing up for what’s right, and most importantly staying true to who you are! When we began rehearsals, I asked each student to create a character arc and to choose two words that describe their character at the start of the story and at the end. Their responses were powerful and empathic and I hope you can see the courage it has taken them to authentically play characters who are messy, misunderstood, and misguided. This group of artists have used their own personal experiences to connect to their characters in a beautiful way. I hope that you enjoy the show, that you are moved by these talented students, and that you remember what it’s like being “13!”
