In late 2017, the eclectic and vibrant East Village theatre scene brought to life East Village Playhouse, a new destination for the arts. Born into the former music shop, Tribal Soundz, a long-time historic destination for thriving and aspiring musicians and recording artists by day, EVP is now home to The CityKids Foundation. An iconic 33-year-old nonprofit organization, CityKids has pioneered and maintained innovative cutting edge youth development programs - training tens of thousands of young people to turn their pain into purpose and to become leaders and motivated agents of social change. By night, it is home to culturally relevant plays and musicals produced and performed by local and professional artists. Created by CityKids’ founder Laurie Meadoff and board member and theater producer Don Hoffman, the fifty-seat East Village Playhouse joins neighborhood theatrical giants like La Mama, Theater for the New City, Performance Space New York (formerly PS122), New York Theatre Workshop, Orpheum Theatre, and The Public Theater to bring needle pushing live theatre and cutting-edge artistic development programs to one of New York's most exciting artistic communities.
