Producing a musical in a high school is always a Herculean task (see what I did, there?). The amount of time and effort to prepare, learn, rehearse, purchase, build, and create a production on this scale, all while being full-time students and teachers is astronomical. And yet, we all sign up to tell these tales again, and again.
Why? Why are theatre makers compelled to make theatre? And why do audiences come to watch the fruit of our efforts? My theory for both questions is that human beings NEED stories. We need communal mental stimulation and emotional connection. We need to think and feel together. We need to be vulnerable and share experiences together to help us become better human beings.
These particular characters and their stories have been told and retold for thousands of years, and yet, the version you will experience today will be unlike any other version you have experienced. Let Anaiis Mitchell’s glorious music and lyrics, and the cast’s storytelling into your heart today. Let’s share this experience with each other, again.
Director’s Thanks:
My parents, E. Patrick and Lorraine Sonzini McGuire, for supporting me in every way possible when I told them I wanted to work in the theatre. All theatre kids should be so blessed.
Mary Jane McGuire, for her sewing superpowers and picking up the slack.
All the parents who fed us, tricked us out, and lent your students to me for a few months.
Clin, for technical support of every kind.
Audience member, I thank you for attending this production and supporting live theatre.
My cast and crew—truly the hardest working students in the god’s almighty world. Look at what we created.
